著名哲学家詹姆斯·卡斯的一书说，世界上总共只有两种游戏：一种是有限游戏，因物质而发起的游戏，比如经商、创业、成名、成家，甚至建设一个国家，都是有限游戏；另一种就是无限游戏，是因精神而发起的游戏，比如科学、艺术、宗教等，所有的人不是为了终结游戏，而是为了延续游戏。有限游戏带给人的是短暂的快乐，而无限游戏却可以持续带给人一种使命感。
