追求声名的人必然会危害其自身，广积财富的人必然会给后代带来灾祸。行善作恶迟迟得不到报应，并不是上天疏忽大意，而是上天想成全君子而灭掉小人。灾祸和福祚是上天用来表示慈爱之心的手段，就像雷雨雪霜一样，都是为了培育滋养万物。所以君子担心有灾祸便恭敬戒惧，小人得了便宜便忘了危险。君子害怕祸来反而会招来福祉，小人以疏忽之心看待福祉反而会招来灾祸，这就是《左传》所说的「祸福没有定数，全由各人自召」。

It wasn't all romantic. I didn't have a dorm room, so I slept on the floor in friends' rooms, I returned coke bottles for the 5¢ deposits to buy food with, and I would walk the 7 miles across town every Sunday night to get one good meal a week at the Hare Krishna temple. I loved it. And much of what I stumbled into by following my curiosity and intuition turned out to be priceless later on.
