【原文】曾子有疾，召门弟子曰：“启予足！启予手!《诗》曰：‘战战兢兢，如临深渊，如履薄冰。’而今而后，吾知免夫！小子。”【译文】曾子得了重病，召集他的弟子们说：“(掀开被子)看看我的脚!看看我的手(有没有毁伤之处)！《诗经》中说：‘小心翼翼，就像站在深渊之旁，就像踩在薄冰之上。’从今以后，我知道(我的身体)再也不会受伤了。弟子们!”

I have a vivid memory of what happened， and it was not what I expected. I expected to be applauded for my cleverness and arithmetic skills. "Jeff， you're so smart. I had no experience in this realm with my grandparents and no way to gauge what the consequences might be. We stopped beside the trailer. My grandfather looked at me， and after a bit of silence， he gently and calmly said， "Jeff， one day you'll understand that it's harder to be kind than clever."
