No man knows, or ever will know, the truth about the gods and about everything I speak of; for even if one chanced to say the complete truth, yet one knows it not; but seeming is wrought over all things.
As to the gods, I do not know whether they exist or not, nor what they are like in form; for there are many things that hinder sure knowledge, the obscurity of the matter and the shortness of human life.
